Misguided

She hitched up her skirts,
And discreetly dismounted.
He watched from the window,
Entranced by the view.
He loved her;
A quite unexpected reaction.
A dreadful dilemma;
All plans set askew.
He'd relinquish the treasure
They'd carefully planned for;
A sacrifice made
As he loved Violet so.
But no comprehension
Of selfless devotion;
The honourable option
To simply let go.

I suppose I do have some sympathy with his selfishness - he knew once she'd left him he'd never see her again. But yes - if he'd truly loved her, making sure she was safe would have been the most important thing to him.

When even a Victorian man recognizes that behavior as selfishness and obsession instead of love, you know you've screwed up.
